Forest Concessions in Brazil:
An effective strategy for the conservation of public forests.
Discover how sustainable forest management and restoration prevents further deforestation and generates local development.
What are forest concessions?
Conserving Brazil’s public forests, promoting sustainable production, stimulating regional economic development, and improving the quality of life of populations living in and around these areas are the main objectives of the forest concession policy, governed by the Public Forest Management Law (Law No. 11,284/2006).
The Public Forest Management Law allows the government to grant legal entities — including companies, cooperatives, and associations of local communities — permission to carry out sustainable forest management for the extraction of timber and non-timber forest products, as well as to provide tourism services.

Federal forest concessions are a public policy instrument that enables the sustainable use of forest resources in National Forests (Flonas), which are publicly managed, through contracts signed with qualified companies. The model aims to promote responsible forest management, ensuring environmental conservation, sustainable production, and the generation of social and economic benefits.
Currently, approximately 1.3 million hectares are under federal forest concession in Brazil. In total, there are 24 Forest Management Units (FMUs) distributed across 10 National Forests, operated by 14 concessionaires. In the Legal Amazon, the survey covers 8 National Forests, encompassing an area of 3.57 million hectares, of which about 1.25 million hectares are officially allocated to forest concessions.
